Acts

Luke

I. First impressions

1.1)What do you see in this book that tells you about the Original Reader?

As the book of Nelson's has described (p.283), the book of Luke was written for the audience of Hellenists.

1.2)What do you see in this book that tells you about the author?

According to the Nelson's book, the book of Luke is technically anonymous, too.  But, the scholars generally agree the Luke wrote this Gospel. And, Luke may have been a Greek physicians to a Roman family.

1.3)Main themes, repeated ideas and main idea:

The main theme is Jesus is the perfect son of Man who came to save and minister to all people through the power of the Holy Spirit and prayer(19:10).
And, the repeated ideas is 'Son of Man'(5:24, 6:5, 6:22, 7:34, 9:22,26,44,56,58, 11:30, 12:8,10,40, 17:22-26,30, 18:8,31, 19:10, 21:27,36, 22:22,48,69, 24:7).

1.4)What is the primary reason this book was written?

To make Hellenists and especially Theophilus be certain of the truth of everything they were thought about Jesus.

II. Theme Tracing

2.1)What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God? &
2.2)What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In 10:38-42, when Jesus visited to Martha's house, she asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her. But the Lord said to her, "My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details!
There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her."
Here we can find that Jesus is concerned about only one valuable thing, and He asks us to live our lives in the same way. He wants that we live our lives preciously, not to consume for worthless/ordinary things. Jesus taught Martha God's words is the only precious one, so to concern about only God's words, not to worry and upset over other things.

Like this, God wants, expects, and loves that we focus on God's words only.  And, then it will not be taken away from us, too.
God loves us so much, so He doesn't want us be taken away. And, when we focus on Him only, we can be redeemed.

III. Application

3.1)Personal application:

In 21:34-36, Jesus said "Watch out! Don't let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by
the worries of this life. Don't let that day catch you unaware like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man."
These verses arouse me to be awakening at all times. And, it makes me repent of nowadays loosened life style. Even though I have confirmation I am saved, I have to hold the faithfulness until the Kingdom of Heaven comes to the earth.

 3.2)Point of Passion Assignment

I want to be a wake up person for the unbelievers. I have to make them understand our life doesn't end in this world, and we have eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. For this, at first, I have to always be awakened and show them what's the Kingdom of Heaven through my life.    -end-

Mark

I. First impressions

1.1)What do you see in this book that tells you about the Original Reader?

As the book of Nelson's has described (p.283), the book of Mark was written for the audience of Romans.

1.2)What do you see in this book that tells you about the author?

According to the Nelson's book, the book of Mark is technically anonymous.  But, the clear testimony of the early church fathers is that this book was written by John Mark(p.316, Acts 12:12)

1.3)Main themes, repeated ideas and main idea:

The main theme is Jesus is the authoritative Son of God as 16:19 "When the Lord Jesus had finished talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God's right hand."
And, the word "immediately" was used many times(2:8,4:16,5:42,6:27,6:45,8:10,13:7,14:43,14:72,16:8) to emphasis the importance of believing the Son of God.

1.4)What is the primary reason this book was written?

To make Romans understand Jesus is the authoritative Son of God.

II. Theme Tracing

2.1)What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God? &
2.2)What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In 14:36, Jesus said,"Abba, Father," he cried out, "everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine."  Here we can find what the true faith is. The true faith is to surrender all the things to God, and want God's will to be done.  And, like this, when we pursue God's will only, we can be redeemed.

III. Application

3.1)Personal application:

In 16:15-16, Jesus told His disciples, "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned." I felt that this verse is uncomfortable to both parties of the speaker and the listener because it may be heard like a threat. But, the more important thing is it's the most urgent thing because if someone refuses to believe will be condemned and nobody know when that time will come to him. Moreover it's Jesus' order to us who believe in Jesus.
 3.2)Point of Passion Assignment

Until now, I have hesitated to share the gospel with unfamiliar people. But, it was Jesus' commandment for us, not the optional task. So, I have to be strong and courageous, and do my best to let them know Jesus and accept Him.    -end-

Matthew

I. First impressions

1.1)What do you see in this book that tells you about the Original Reader?

As the book of Nelson's has summarized (p.283), the book of Matthew was written for the audience of Jews.
And, we can meet many faithful Jews  like the woman who had touched the Jesus' clothes with the faith that she will be healed from the constant bleeding if she can just touch His robe. And, all of them have been cured by their faith.(1:20-22)
On the contrary, Jesus' hometown people didn't believe in Jesus. And, most all of the Pharisees,Sadducees, the leading priests and the teachers of religious persecuted Jesus and looked for an opportunity to capture Jesus and kill him.(14:1)

1.2)What do you see in this book that tells you about the author?

Nevertheless there is no evidence of the author of this book, according to the book of Nelson's, church tradition has recognized Matthew as its writer.(p.300)

1.3)Main themes, repeated ideas and main idea:

The main theme is Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God.(16:16)

1.4)What is the primary reason this book was written?

To make Jews know Jesus is the Messiah and believe in His resurrection.(Ch.28)

II. Theme Tracing

2.1)What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God? &
2.2)What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In 27:46, Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" which means "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?" Here we can find Jesus suffered the extreme pain not only physically but also spiritually as a real Human being. He has experienced the most terrible sufferings on the cross. He sacrificed himself like that so that we can be redeemed even though we committed tons of sins. Furthermore, through this sufferings, He equipped with the perfect condition we can call Him our friend and redeemer in a same time.

III. Application

3.1)Personal application:

In 28:16-17, "Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but some of them doubted!" What a surprise that even some of 11 disciples doubted about Jesus!  How I am close to those disciples !
But, remind the past time when I just began to believe in Jesus. How many questions I had at that time, which make me doubt Jesus !  Nevertheless I'm still having several questions, how many answers I received from God !
So, be careful not to doubt God because of the unsolved questions! Just pray and ask Him to help me understand Him more!

3.2)Point of Passion Assignment

Jesus told his disciples in 28:19-20 "Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
I want to be a witness of Jesus for unbelievers in this world.  I know why they cannot believe in God even though they want to understand and believe in Him. Then, I need to prepare my testimonies how I could believe in God, and have to go and make disciples of all the nations.    -end-

Malachi

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

According to the book of Nelson's, the author,Malachi was a prophet in the days of Nehemiah, and he directed his message of judgement to a people plagued with corrupt priest, wicked practices, and a false sense of security.  Through 1:8, we can know this book was written during the Persian domination of Israel. And, it seems that Malachi proclaimed his message while Nehemiah was absent between 432 and 425 BC.
At that time, the people of Israel had become disillusioned and doubtful. So, Malachi challenges these problems and attitudes and calls the people to a new commitment and obedience.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?
There is one of God's character in the chapter of 2:2, "Listen to me and make up your minds to honor my name, says the Lord of Heaven's Armies, or I will bring a terrible curse against you. I will curse even blessings you receive. Indeed, I have already cursed them, because you have not taken my warning to heart." Here we can see God who is so jealous for our minds that He cannot tolerate our betray.

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the Chapter 4, it has been described about the coming day of judgement.
“The day of judgement is coming, burning like a furnace. On that day the arrogant and the wicked will be burned up like straw. They will be consumed - roots, branches, and all.  But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. ~ His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise I will come and strike the land with a curse.”
In this chapter we can figure out who will be judged and cursed on the day of judgement. They are arrogant and wicked people.  And, God said we have to fear God's name so as not to fall into curse. And, when we keep the God's words in our hearts and keep the covenant, then we can be redeemed.   -end-

Zechariah

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

According to the book of Nelson's, the author of Zechariah is Zechariah, the grandson of Iddo.(1:1)  Zechariah was a younger contemporary of Haggai the prophet, Zerubbabel the governor, and Joshua the high priest. This book uses eight visions, fore messages, and two burdens to portray God's future plans for His covenant people. The first eight chapters were written to encourage the remnant while they were rebuilding the temple; the last six chapters were written after the completion of the temple to anticipate Israel's coming Messiah.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

In 1:14, we can find one of God's character that He loves His people so passionately and strongly. And, in 7:10, we find God who is very concerned with the poor, orphans, widows, and foreigners.

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the ch.14th, a prophecy of the day of the Lord was described.  "On that day the sources of light will no longer shine, yet there will be continuous day! ~ And, the Lord will be king over all the earth.  On that day there will be one Lord-his name alone will be worshiped."(14:6-9)  Through this Chapter, we can understand how we can participate with God's redemptive plan.     -end-

Haggai

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

According to the book of Nelson's, the author of Haggai is the prophet Haggai. He prophesied in 520BC, and his task was urging the people to complete the temple.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

In 1:8, God said to Israellites to go up into the hills, bring down timber, and rebuild His house, then He will take pleasure in it and be honored. Here, we can find our God wants that we will serve for His holiness and honor. And, in it He will take pleasure. We can read God's mind that he put the best value of the world on us.

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In 2:6-7, we can find God's redemptive plan as "In just a little while I will again shake the heavens and the earth, the oceans and the dry land. I will shake all the nations, and the treasures of all the nations will be brought to this Temple. I will fill this place with glory."    -end-

Esther

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

According to the book of Nelson's, the events described in Esther occurred between 483-473BC. It provides the only biblical portrait of the vast majority of Jews who chose to remain in Persia rather than return to Palestine. This book may be divided into two main sections:the threat to the Jews(chs.1-4) and the triumph of the Jews(chs.5-10). And, even the word for 'God' is not found in the text, we can find God's providential protection of His people.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

When Esther went  in to see the king to save Jews, it was against the law,and she might die.(4:16)  But, on the contrary, the king welcomed her and appointed he will give anything she requests.(5:2-3)  So, Esther could save Jews and kill a lot of Jews' enemies.(9:16)  Here we can find God uses the people and turn the impossible to be possible. Only He can be a shield and strength when we are faced with a matter of life or death.

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

Like the Israellites could survive and reduce the enemies, even we seem very poor, weak and valueless compare to the enemies, we will be redeemed and triumph them when that time comes on earth.

4.Personal application:

Like Mordecai and Esther, I have to be bold with the mindset of "If I must die, I must die."(4:16)

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to help unbelievers listen the gospel, be reborn as the christian, and get their eternal lives. If this is to save the lives of them, I have to do it like as Esther did, "If I must die, I must die."   -end-

Nehemiah

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

According to the Nelson's, the book of Nehemiah is a complement to the Book of Ezra.  It provides additional information about the religious and social reforms that took place in Judah and Jerusalem in the mid-fifth century BC. While Ezra deals with the religious restoration of Judah, Nehemiah is primarily concerned with Judah's political and geographical restoration. Great attention is devoted to the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

After the wall was finished, all the people assembled with a unified purpose, and Ezra read the Book of the Law aloud to everyone and explained the meaning of what was being read, helping the people understand each passage. And, the people had all been  weeping as they listened to the words of the Law(8:2-9).
Then Nehemiah said to the people"Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. Don't be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!(8:10)."
It's not difficult to imagine the atmosphere at that time. All the people should be surrounded fully with the Holy spirit. So, their mindset, speeches, and activities reveal Gods character. And, in this verse(8:10), we can find the God's character, who is caring the poor and pleased with the sight of people's joyousness instead of dejectedness or sadness.
Right, in any cases we can & have to be joyful because the joy of the Lord is our strength!

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the Ch.8:11-12, the situation repeated as "And the Levites, too, quieted the people, telling them, "Hush! Don't weep! For this is a sacred day." So the people went away to eat and drink at a festive meal, to share gifts of food, and to celebrate with great joy because they had heard God's words and understood them." What a holy, peaceful, and joyful scene it is! And, the real God's redemption was achieved when the people heard God's words and understood them.

4.Personal application:

When I accepted the gospel several years ago, I couldn't convince I'm free from the sins. I could understand I should be free, but couldn't feel it actually. Now I could find the secret, it was the words of God. Just after we understand God's words, we can repent wholeheartedly and get the freedom from our sins.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to help unbelievers know about Jesus, accept the gospel, and be freed from their sins. If I don't know about Jesus, how can I help them? If I am not free from my sins, how can I help them be freed from their sins? Only God's words-the Bible-can make me know about Jesus and and be freed from my sins. And, I can help unbelievers, too.   -end-

Ezra

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

As it's written in Nelson's, Ezra is supposed to be the author of this book. And, he probably wrote this book between 457 BC and 444 BC.
Ezra relates the first two returns from Babylon, the first led by Zerubbabel and the second led decades later by Ezra. Its two divisions are the restoration of the temple(Ch.1-6) and the reformation of the people(Ch.7-10).
As described in Nelson's, the basic theme of Ezra is restoration-the restoration of the temple, and the spiritual, moral, and social restoration of the returned remnant in Jerusalem under the leadership of Zerubbabel and Ezra.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

In 1:1"~the Lorda fulfilled the prophecy he had given through Jeremiah. He stirred the heart of Cyrus~", we can find God is so faithful that this prophecy of Jeremiah was fulfilled after about 150years later.
And, in 6:3-8, "~a decree was sent out concerning the Temple of God at Jerusalem.~You must pay the full construction costs, without delay, from my taxes collected in the province~", God used the King of Persia Cyrus to provide expenses for the rebuilding of the Temple, here we can meet God, who provides fully to our needs.

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In Ch.10, Ezra and the people confess their sin, and Ezra ordered to the people who married with pagan women to divorce and send them away with their children.
To the heads of the families, the first importance was probably their wives and children. So, when they obeyed to send their wives and children, it means they repented verily and gave up their idolatry. Like this, we can expect God's redemption just after we repent our sin and give up all kinds of idols which we raised up higher than God.

4.Personal application:

It's easy to confess that nothing is more important than God. But, it's not easy to give the priority to godly thing in any cases. How easily I delay or skip reading God's words because of the ordinary things! How weak devotion of mine compare to the devotion of the Israellites who returned from exile!  One by one, I have to practice to delay the ordinary things later before I do the godly things.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to be an evangelist for unbelievers who rejects the gospel because of their stubborn mindset. How can I understand them about Jesus' love? How can I equip the Israellites' devotion and touch their mind ?  My first step can be giving up all of my idolatry and give the priority to the godly things.     -end-

Daniel

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Daniel was claimed to write this book(12:4), and he used the autobiographical first person from 7:2 onward. Daniel was a Jewish youth of noble birth carried off to Babylon in the first captivity under Nebuchadnezzar in 605BC. He became a member of the Babylonian royal service early in his captivity and spent most of his career as a high-ranking advisor to Nebuchadnezzar. He ministered for the full duration of the Babylon captivity as a prophet and government official.
And, after Babylon was conquered by the Persians in 539BC, Daniel achieved considerable importance again under King Darius. His prophetic ministry was directed to the Gentile courts of Babylon and Persia, as well as the his Jewish countrymen. Zerubbabel led a return of the Jews to Jerusalem in the first year of Cyrus, and Daniel lived and ministered at least until the third year of Cyrus(539BC; 10:1). Daniel's book would appear to have been written by the ninth year of Cyrus(530BC).

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

In the Daniel's praising God, we can find God's characters.
"Praise the name of God forever and ever, for he has all wisdom and power. He controls the course of world events; he removes kings and sets up other kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars. He reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden in darkness, through he is surrounded by light"(2:20-22).
And, we can find it even in the King Darius's message as "For he is living God, and he will endure forever. ~ he performs miraculous signs and wonders in the heavens and on earth.(6:26-27)

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

Through the vision of Daniel, we can meet God's redemptive plan very obviously.;  "~I saw someone like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence. He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal- it will never end.  His kingdom will never be destroyed."(7:13-14)

4.Personal application:

The book of Daniel includes the most famous stories in the Bible; Daniel's three friends in the fiery furnace, the handwriting on the wall at Belshazzar's feast, and Daniel in the den of lions. These stories are not only interesting, but also very impressed because their lives were characterized by faith, prayer, courage, consistency, and lack of compromise.
Compare to their lives, my life is too easy going, lazy, coward, and changeable. Nevertheless I could be forgiven and saved from my sins. How can it be available? Right,it's God's grace!
I don't know how I could get this privilege. Just I thank God, and have to change my life to resemble with Daniel and his three friends.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to help unbelievers know God and believe in Him. For this, most of all, I have to show them my faithfulness. If not, I cannot help them, and further more, they may be doubt of God because of my immature faith. I have to stop considering that my faith is my own personal matter. Actually, my faith influences a lots of people around me. How can I accompany with Daniel & his friends' faith journey ?    -end-

Ezekiel

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Ezekiel was carried off to exile in Babylon after the city fell a second time to Nebuchadnezzar in 597BC. His first vision is probably to be dated in the year 593-92BC, and latest date given for an oracle is probably 571-70BC. So, his ministry is about twenty years long.
The book of Ezekiel can be divided into four sections; the call and commission of Ezekiel(Ch.1-3), the judgement on Judah(Ch.4-24), the judgement on the Gentiles(Ch.25-32), and the restoration of Israel(Ch.33-48).
Ezekiel prophesied the judgement against Judah and false prophets, and judgement upon the nations surrounding Israel; Ammon,Moab,Edom,Philistia,Tyre, and Sidon.
By the way, with the fall of Jerusalem, Ezekiel's attention turns to the future restoration of Israel. He views the return of the glory of the Lord to the temple from the east(43:1-12).

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

Even after God declared that no hope remains in Israel because he will unleash His anger against her,and the end was there(7:2-3), God still ask them to repent to turn back and live(18:30-32)
"The end is here!~ No hope remains, for I will unleash my anger against you. I will call you to account for all your detestable sins. I will turn my eyes away and show no pity.(7:2-4)"
"Therefore, I will judge each of you, O people of Israel, according to your actions, says the Sovereign Lord. Repent, and turn form your sins. Don't let them destroy you! Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O people of Israel? I don't want you to die, says the Sovereign Lord. Turn back and live!(18:30-32)
Here we can meet our God who eagerly want not to destroy us. And, He so kindly teach us how we can get His forgiveness.

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the verses of 34:7-16, God says that "I will rescue my flock from their mouths, the sheep will no longer be their prey.~ I myself will tend my sheep and give them a place to lie down in peace."  And, in the verses 34:22-24, we can find He has a plan to send us Jesus; "So I will rescue my flock, and they will no longer be abused. I will judge between one animal of the flock and another. And I will set over them one shepherd, my servant David. He will feed them and be a shepherd to them.
And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David will be a prince among my people. I, the Lord, have spoken!"

4.Personal application:

If I feel now is the most dark and gloom season of my life, it means now God is within me and he is telling me continuously how I can find the way to overcome this darkness. And, God sent me My shepherd,Jesus, and in any situations, he will be a guidance of me. Everything that I need to do and I can do is just focus on Jesus and follow to His footprint.

5.Point of Passion Assignment
I want to be an evidence of existence of God to unbelievers. For that, I have to live a joyful life everyday because I have saved and renewed from the past sinful life. Then the unbeliever can see the evidence of God's existence, and they will want to believe in God, too.  -end-

Obadiah

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Edom's cooperation with foreigners in sacking Jerusalem (verse10-14) forms the historical background to the prophecy. It may have occurred probably 850BC in the reigh of Jehoram during a period of revolt by Edom when Judah was threatened by invading Philistines and Arabians.  On the other hand, also possible is a reference to Edomite complicity in the Babylonian capture of Jerusalem in 586BC.
Thus, possible dates for the composition of Obadiah are 840BC, or between the fall of Jerusalem in 586BC and the fall of Babylon to Cyrus in 539BC.
And, this book carries a strong message of judgement for Edom that their fate is sealed because of their long history of opposing God's people.
And, this book also carries a message of the restoration of Israel(verse19-21).

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

God judge the arrogant nation as described in the verse of 1:3-4. ; "You have been deceived by your own pride ~ I will bring you crashing down".
And, God judge especially when we do violence to our close relatives. Then  we will be filled with shame and destroyed forever(1:10).

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the verses from 17 to 21, Obadiah prophesies the restoration of Israel. And, it ends like as "Those who have been rescued will go up to Mount Zion in Jerusalem to rule over the mountains of Edom. And the Lord himself will be king."

4.Personal application:

We are having a relative country of North Korea. God wants we do help them and not to be against them or neglect them. He told that they will do to us as we do to them(1:15). So, I have to try to have concerns about our relative North Korea.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to make the unbelievers know God and love Him and believe in Him. Especially I have to have concerns about our relative country North Korea. This country is one of the most risky and difficult countries to evangelize. But, I have to follow to God's command to love our relatives. How can I help them, how can I make them know well about God ? My mission can be started with prayer for this country.  -end-

Habakkuk

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Internal evidence in the book of Habakkuk indicates a date between the death of King Josiah(609BC) and the beginning of the Babylonian captivity(605BC).
The only explicit time references in this book are to the Babylonian invasion as an imminent event(1:6, 2:1, 3:16).
And, the deplorable conditions of the people(1:2-4) imply a date after the untimely death of Josiah(609BC) and early in the wicked reign of King Jehoiakim(609-597BC)

Realizing Israel's iniquity and need for punishment, Habakkuk was perplexed why God employ the even more wicked Babylonians to chastise His children. God gave him answer that everyone must eventually face judgement for their offenses(2:2-20). God also gave him a vision of His infinite glory(ch.3). And, he joyfully praised the God.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

In the vision of Habakkuk, we can see God's nature as "His brilliant splendor fills the heavens, and the earth is filled with his praise"(3:3).
And, as many time God told us he dislikes the proud, the wealthy, the arrogant and the greedy(2:4-5).

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the verse of 3:13 "You went out to rescue your chosen people, to save your anointed ones", Habakkuk is prophesying that God will rescue and save His people. And,he prophesied in 2:14 as "For as the waters fill the sea, the earth will be filled with an awareness of the glory of the Lord."

4.Personal application:

As the verse of 3:17-19, even though I cannot get any result from my effort, even though all the circumstances are against me, and even though my situations are being changed for the worse day by day, yet I have to rejoice in the Lord, I have to be joyful in the God of my salvation.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to be a bridge which is connecting the unbelievers with God. I want to be a bridge through it the unbelievers who lost their hope and meaning of life can find their hope and new life. Then, even though they feel they lost everything, they could be joyful because of God. Like this I want to be passage through this way the unbelievers can find a way toward God.   -end-

Zephaniah

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Zephaniah fixes the time of his prophecy "in the days of Josiah son of Amon, King of Judah"(1:1) And, considering the situations of Josiah's reign period(640-609BC), the year of destruction of Nineveh(612BC), and Josiah's religious reforms began about 628BC, the time of Zephaniah may be dated about 635-625BC.
This is a fierce and grim book of warning about the coming day of the Lord. Desolation, darkness, and ruin will strike Judah and nations because of the wrath of God upon sin.
But, on the other hand, this book includes the message of the restoration of Israel, and the salvation in the day of the Lord(3:8-20).

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

In the verse 3:8, we can meet one character of God. God told "All the earth will be devoured by the fire of my jealousy". Like this, our got is jealous God. He is jealous of us, He doesn't allow we turn against Him and worship idols.
And, in 3:11, we can find that our God dislikes arrogance and haughtiness. He says"I will remove all proud an arrogant people from among you. There will be no more haughtiness on my holy mountain."

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the verse of 3:15-17, we can see the God's plan that He will stop His judgement and save the Jerusalem promising He will be together with them; "For the Lord will remove his hand of judgement ~. And, the Lord himself, the King of Israel will live among you! ~ For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior."

4.Personal application:

Even God punishes us because of our sins, His purpose is to restore us through cleansing us and stand us among all the nations.(3:20)  So, I have to keep my faith in any situations, in any unfair or unknowable situations.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to make unbelievers know about God, understand Him and believe in Him. When I make them understand well how God is jealous of them, they should be touched so much and very joyful for that truth and falling in love with God. How wonderful mission it is!!    -end-

Lamentations

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

The book of Lamentations consists of five mournful poems.
(1)the destruction of Jerusalem, (2)the anger of Yahweh, (3)the prayer for mercy, (4)the siege of Jerusalem, (5)the prayer for restoration.
As we can guess through the titles, the author of this book gives a strong impression of one who had just experienced the horrors of the destruction of the Holy City and the temple. This fact suggests a date of composition shortly after 586BC.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

When Jerusalem was fallen and Judah has been led away into captivity, they reached out for help, but no one comforted them(1:3,17). And, the Lord has said,"Let their neighbors be their enemies! Let them be thrown away like a filthy rag!"(1:17). Through this phrase, we can find that God does just as he planned. He has fulfilled the promises of disaster he made long ago.(2:17)  God is merciful, but He is just as well. And, He fulfills these two conflict characters through us. Even though we committed sins, when we repent, he is merciful, but when we rebel against Him, He destroys us without mercy.

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

Even though God destroyed Jerusalem with out mercy, Jerusalem repents and ask His help to plead her. So, we can foresee that Jerusalem will be redeemed later(3:58). Because God will keep His promise of 3:25 "The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him. So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord."

4.Personal application:

God is merciful. But, He is merciful and forgive me when I repent my sins. If I rebel him and don't repent, there may be God's judgement only. So,I have to keep being humbled and repent for my sins.

5.Point of Passion Assignment
I want to be a messenger who sends a message to the unbelievers that God is merciful and just. When I send this message enough well to the unbelievers so that they can understand, then they can be a faithful children of God.
Keep in mind about the fall of Israel and how Judah people were suffered owing to their rebellion. And, try not to take the same misstep.   -end-

Jeremiah

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Jeremiah was a contemporary of Zephaniah,Habakkuk,Daniel, and Ezekiel, and his ministry stretched from probably 627 to 580BC.
From 627 to 605BC he prophesied while Judah was threatened by Assyria an Egypt. From 605 to 586BC he proclaimed God's judgement while Judah was threatened and besieged by Babylon. From 586 to about 580BC he ministered in Jerusalem and Egypt after Judah's downfall.
During that time people believed that God would not let Jerusalem fall because they possessed the temple and the one true religion. Jeremiah was required to tell them that the terms of God's covenant mandated punishment for disobedience.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

There is one of God' character in Ch 2:35, described as "you say, 'I have done nothing wrong. Surely God isn't angry with me!' But now I will punish you severely because you claim you have not sinned". Like this our God hates our human arrogance most of all. And, it means He is loving human humility.
And, God told to Jeremiah to search throughout the city, if he can find even one just and honest person, God will not destroy the city(5:1). In this phrase, we can find that our God is concerned with and knows everything about each of us.
In the Ch 7:5, God says "I will be merciful only if you stop your evil thoughts and deeds and start treating each other with justice". Here we can see one of God's character of "justice".
In 23:9-39, God tells us how we distinguish the false prophets and not to be deceived by this wicked men. Even though He decided to punish the people of Judah, He is still worrying about His people. It means nevertheless we have to punished because of our sins, God still loves us till the end.

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?
This book tells us continuously about the punishment of God according to the sins of people, nevertheless we can find God's redemptive plan in the same time. In the verse of 3:15, God says as "I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will guide you with knowledge and understanding. And when your land is once more filled with people." Like this, God was planning to send us Jesus.

4.Personal application:

Often Jeremiah wanted to quit his job as a prophet because his message was so hash and miserable that he got just unfriendly responses. Nevertheless he obeyed God, and have sent His message to the people over 40 years.
If I were Jeremiah at that time, could I obey God's command like him? I cannot confirm it. Why? Because even though now I have a command to send a good message(not hash, not miserable!) to the people, I am so lazy and coward to do it.
How can I be eager and courageous for this mission of evangelism? When I meet someone who doesn't know about Jesus, I have to remind the prophet Jeremiah. Then I might feel be happy for that I don't need to send the hash message to him, instead I have very good news about Jesus.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to be a messenger of God, and send the God's good news to the people who couldn't hear it or misunderstood it, even who rebel, reject and object it. Don't forget there are so many people who couldn't get opportunity to hear well about the Gospel in the world. I have to feel emergency because there are so many people who are suffering, crying and dying at this moment.    -end-

Isaiah

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Isaiah's ministry ranged from 740 to 680 BC.(1:1). This period is from near the end of Uzziah's reign through the reigns of Jotham,Ahaz, and Hezekiah.
During the time of Isaiah, Assyria was growing in power under Tiglath-Pileser,who conquered many nations including the Northern Kingdom of Israel(722 BC).
This book can be divided into three sections;prophecies of condemnation(ch.1-35), and historical parenthesis of interlude(ch.36-39), and prophecies of comfort and consolation(ch.40-66).
Isaiah's message is presented against the background of Israel's greatest period of prosperity after the "Golden Age" under David and Solomon. Prosperity, agricultural and commercial success, and military success were accompanied by immorality, excessive drinking, idolatry, oppression of the poor, greed, and the presence of false prophets. In response to this situation, Isaiah stressed salvation by faith, the holiness of God, the offense of human sin and the assurance of redemption for a repentant remnant.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

In the verse 1:14 "I hate your new moon celebrations and your annual festivals", we can find God doesn't like showmanship of Pharisee.
On the other hand, God ordered us to help the oppressed, orphans, and widows instead of showing our faith in front of people.(1:17)
And, in this book, many chapters were allocated for describing about God's judgement against the pagan countries and cities surrounding Israel(Ch.10-Assyria, 13/21-Babylon, 14-Philistia, 15~16-Moab, 17-Damascus, 18-Ethiopia, 19-Egypt,23-Tyre, 28-Samaria).
Like this, even though the messages are about the judgement, we can understand that God is watching at and concerning about all the nations.
And, we can meet very passionate God to have a relationship with us in Ch.65:1-2 ; "I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help. I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me. I said, "Here I am, here I am!" to a nation that did not call on my name." All day long I opened my arms to a rebellious people. But they follow their own evil paths and their own crooked schemes. - How he loves us! How we make God feel lonely!

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the ch.11:1~5, we can find a prophecy about Jesus's descent. This book prophesied the redeemer would come from David's family(11:1), and he would give justice to the poor, and the earth would shake at the force of his word(11:4).
And, in the ch.11:10, it was written as "In that day the heir to David's throne will be a banner of salvation to all the world."

4.Personal application:

I repent for the time I made God feel anxious, sorry, sad and lonely. What made me be so arrogant and rebellious against God ? I thank God for the long time He waited being opened His arms to me.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to help nonbelievers to know that God is still waiting for their repentance, and He is very passionate to have a intimate relationship with them.
How can I make them understand about this loving God.
How can I be passionate to love them like as God was passionate toward me.
I have to love them more and more, and wait them longer and longer with opened arms.   -end-

Nahum

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Since the message of the book is a prediction of the destruction of Nineveh, it must have been delivered sometime 612BC., when the city was destroyed by the Babylonians. It was written after 663BC.,the year that the capital of Egypt,Thebes, was captured by Assyria. Since Thebes regained its independence in654BC.,and Nahum does not allude to that event, it may by that the book was written between 663 and 654BC.
Nahum proclaims the doom of the Assyrian capital of Nineveh. Among the reasons for the condemnation of the city are the inhumanities of the Assyrian army(2:12), and the vices of the city(3:4). The nature of God, specially His wrath, His holiness, and His power, makes it inevitable that His enemies will perish(1:2-10)

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

The Lord is jealous God,filled with vengeance and rage. He takes revenge on all who oppose him(1:2)
The Lord is slow to get angry, but his power is great, and  he never lets the guilty go unpunished.(1:3)
His rage blazes forth like fire(1:6)
The lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes, He is close to those who trust in Him(1:7)

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the verse of 1:15, Nahum prophesy Jesus will come to the earth as;"Look! A messenger is coming over the mountains with good news! He is bringing a message of peace.

4.Personal application:

The Lord's rage blazes like fie. He destroyed the whole city of Nineveh which he loved so much in the book of Jonah. His power is greater than any other.
By the way, why I fear of the earthly power instead of Godly one? Logically I do understand very well that there is nothing impossible and I'm strong because God is always in my side and support on me.  But, actually I feel I'm not strong in front of the power of the earthly world.  Be strong and be courageous!!  My god is stronger than any other, and he is in my side !!!

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to help nonbelievers to know they are strong when they believe in God.  For this, I have to show how I'm strong as a child of God.  Be strong and be courageous - This is the mission God gave me so to expand the Kingdom of God in the earth.

Jonah

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Jonah was a contemporary of Jeroboam II of Israel(782-753BC) who ministered after the time of Elisha and just before the time of Amos and Hosea. Assyria, a nation which had achieved a near-legendary reputation for cruelty, was in mild decline during these years, but it remained a threat. The repentance of Nineveh probably occurred in the reign of Ashurdan III (773-755BC). This book served to challenge the nationalistic pride of Israel. And, this book shows God's gracious extension of His mercy to Gentile nations.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

Through the Jonah's complaint, we can find God’s love forward people “~ I knew you are a 1)Merciful and 2)Compassionate God, 3)Slow to get angry and 4)Filled with unfailing love. You are 5)eager to turn back from destroying people(4:2).  Furthermore, through the context of this book we can find He is God who persuade people when they have opposite opinion and likes the sincere repentance of us.

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

Through the verse 4:10, we can find that God knows that we are so selfish and jealous that we complain even about the God's grace for the other people. So, He probably could feel something very different and powerful salvation plan. And, it was actualized through Jesus Christ.

4.Personal application:

My mindset is very similar to Jonah's. Even though I am created by God, I always try to judge and evaluate Him. So, every time I'm complaining about God's working, I have to remind that I'm a creature of Him.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to help nonbelievers to know and believe in God. For this I have to show them that I don't complain about any kinds of conditions which God allowed, and reveal joyful life as one of christian.    -end-

Micah

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

The first verse indicates that Micah prophesied in the days of Jotham(739-731BC),Ahaz(731-715BC) andd Hezekiah(715-686BC),kings of Judah. During the ministry of Micah, the kingdom of Israel continued to crumble inwardly and outwardly until its collapse in 722BC. So,the prophet highlighted the corruption of the political and religious leaders of Judah. And, he gave warning about the judgement of God, and recommended to look to the Lord for help, and said then God will hear and save us.(7:4,7)

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

In the verse of 7:18, we can find God's character. He pardons the guilt of us overlooking the sins of us. He is delight in showing unfailing love. And, he requires of us to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God.(6:8)

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In 5:2, we can find a prophecy about Jesus' birth in Bethlehem.

4.Personal application:

I am sinner, for whose sins, even big money can not be enough. But, God said to us as "I will do mighty miracles for you, like those I did when I rescued you from slavery in Egypt"(7:15). Yes, it's a miracle that I could be saved from my sins. And, I was given from Mighty God. How can I stop thank to God for this?

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to help nonbelievers understand why they are sinners, and how they can get free.  But, many people think they are not sinners, they are good enough compare to the evil people. So, the only way I can make them understand about the sin is to let them find something difference in my face and behavior. I have to let them find joy in me, which they have never experienced. Then they may can understand or guess what the freedom of sins is.   -end-

Joel

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Since the book includes no explicit time reference, it cannot be dated with certainty. It has traditionally been dated 835BC, when Joash was placed upon the throne at the age of seven and Jehoiada the priest functioned as the real ruler(2Ki 11:12). Since Joel does not mention idolatry, it may have been written after the purge of Baal worship early in the reign of Joash under Jehoiada the priest. This book develops the crucial theme of the coming day of the Lord(1:15 / 2:1,11,31/ 3:14,18) - a time of awesome judgement upon people and nations that have rebelled against God. But it is also a time of future blessing upon those who have trusted in Him.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

God likes our whole heartily repentance as the phrase 2:12,18 "That is why the Lord says, 'Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. ~Then the Lord will pity his people'"  God has mercy on us just when we repent whole heartily.

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the phrase 2:32, we can get a hope that we will be saved. "But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, for some on Mount Zion in Jerusalem will escape, just as the Lord has said. These will be among the survivors whom the Lord has called.

4.Personal application:

God asks us to turn to Him, while there is time. How many times have I delayed my faith journey ?  I regard I have plenty time to turn to God. So, I can do something later, not now.
But, God orders that do it while there is time. Remind always that God does not wait until I'm ready to do something. God has already waited long time, so don't delay anymore and take action now !!

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to help nonbelievers to know and believe in God. Nonbelievers are always feel they are having much enough time for checking out God. But, time does not wait for human even one second!!  Persuade them God is waiting for them to turn to him just right now!!
  -end-

Hosea

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Hosea evidently compiled this book during the early years of Hezekiah, and his ministry stretched from 755BC to about 710BC. When Hosea began his ministry, Israel was enjoying a temporary period of political and economic prosperity under Jeroboam II. Hosea's message reflects the terrible fascination of Israel with Baal worship. And, Hosea provides one of the most eloquent expressions of God's mercy.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

We can meet merciful and compassionate God in the Ch.8- "Oh how can I give you up, Israel?  How can I let you go?  How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows."

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the phrase 14:4, the Lord says, "Then I will heal you of your faithlessness; my love will know no bounds, for my anger will be gone forever." He we can find God is preparing Loving God instead of Justice & Judging God. And, His love was expressed in maximum when Jesus died for the mankind's redemption.

4.Personal application:

My love for God is very similar to the love of Gomer. Nevertheless I know how God want I love Him in every second, I'm so easily forget His love and go out seeking other love. Keep in mind one love is enough for me! God's love is big enough to cover all the other loves in the world.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to help nonbelievers to know what God's love is. Then, my eyes should be forcused on the love of God always. If I love another lover, how I can say to others that I love my spouse?
  -end-

Amos

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

According to 1:1, Amos prophesied during the reigns of Uzziah, king of Judah(769-739 BC), and Jeroboam, king of Israel(782-753 BC). The prophecy of 7:9-11 seems to indicate a time late in the reign of Jeroboam and a probable date of writing is 760-753BC.
Amos ministered when Uzziah reigned over a prosperous and militarily successful Judah. And, during these years, Assyria,Babylon,Syria and Egypt were relatively weak.
Thus, the people of Israel found it hard to imagine the coming disaster predicted by Amos- a disaster that occurred barely three decades later.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

Amos was not a professional prophet(7:14),instead he was a common man whose occupation was herding sheep. Amos was called by God to be a spokesman(7:15)
Like this, God's viewpoint is very different from ours. God is using a person who is faithful.  But, we are forcing on his career and social position. Like this, God always concerns about the faith, and he recruits us fairly.

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the verse 9:11, it's prophesied as "In that day I will restore the fallen house of David. I will repair its damaged walls. From the ruins I will rebuilt it". Our body is the church and house of David where God lives in it. Nevertheless, our body was spoiled because of our sins. But, God promised He will restore the fallen house. It was achieved through the death of Jesus.

4.Personal application:

In the verse 5:12, I could find the record of my sins. - "For I know the vast number of your sins and the depth of your rebellions." Yes, God know all about me, he is calculating the number of my sins. Nevertheless, I could be saved and free from the sins thanks to Jesus's blood. And, now He orders me to live joyfully at any time. How graceful my life is!  Keep in mind that never forget Jesus and obey Him until I meet Him.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to be a witness of God for nonbelievers. For this, don't forget the vision of warnings of Amos, don't commit crime. And do walk along with Jesus in any time and in any where.

King Rehoboam later replaced them with bronze shields as substitutes, and he entrusted them to the care of the commanders of the guard who protected the entrance to the royal palace. Whenever the king went to the Temple of the LORD, the guards would also take the shields and then return them to the guardroom(1Ki 14:27~28).

-.MESSAGE: When Rehoboam tried to fight against the Israel to restore the kingdom of himelf, Shemaiah said to Rehoboam, all the people of Judah, Benjamin, and to the rest of the people what the LORD said to him. The message was not to fight against their relatives, the Israelites, instead, to go back home, for what has happened was LORD's doing(1Ki 12:23~24).
-.RESPONDS: They obeyed the message of the LORD and went home, as the LORD had commanded(1Ki 12:24).
-.FULFILLED: N/A

#3 PROPHET’S NAME: A man of God from Judah
-.MESSAGE: 1) A child named Josiah will be born into the dynasy of David(1Ki 13:2)
-.RESPONDS: N/A
-.FULFILLED: 1) Josiah became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem 31years:640-609BC (2Ki 22:1).
And, there was constant war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam(1Ki 14:30).

3. INTERPRETATION in light of Original Reader
After King Solomon died, the leaders of Israel asked Rehoboam to Lighten the harsh labor demands and heavy taxes that his father Solomon imposed on them. And, then they will be his loyal subjects(1Ki 12:3~4 =2Chr 10:3~4).
But, he answered he will make them even heavier than his father, and paid no attention to the people(1Ki 12:15 =2Chr 10:15).
When all Israel realized that the king had refused to listen to them, they returned their homes back(1Ki 12:16 =2Chr 10:16).). And, the northern tribes of Israel have refused to be ruled by a descendant of David(1Ki 12:20), and they made Jeroboam their King.

4. REMARKS:
Rehoboam's mother was Naamah, an Ammonite woman(1Ki 14:31).
The people of Judah did what was evil in the LORD's sight, and they built for themselves pagan shrines and set up sacred pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree(1Ki 14:22~23).
There were even male and female shrine prostitutes throughout the land. The people imitated the detestable practices of the pagan nations the LORD had driven from the land ahead of the Israelites(1Ki 14:24).

5. LEADERSHIP APPLICATION:
Through the story of King Rehoboam and his people, we can realize how important the leadership is for the whole people of a nation. When the leader did evil things, his whole people became to commit the same evil things very easily. It means the corruption of a leader is not only his own problem, but also bring the same problems to the whole people he reigns like an epidemic.
So, we have to pray for the leader of our country, and for the leaders of other nations, too. -end-

Life of the Kings of Judah (2)
.Name of king : Abijam(Abijah)
.Year of Reign: 3 years(1Ki 15:1~2)
.Scripture References: 1Ki 14:31, 15:1~8
.Good / bad king: Bad king (1Ki 15:3)

1. Key events in the life of this king
-.BATTLES: Constant war between Abijam and Jeroboam
-.ALLIANCES: N/A
-.OTHER EVENTS: N/A

2. Prophets during the life of the king
-.PROPHET’S NAME: N/A
-.MESSAGE: N/A
-.RESPONDS: N/A
-.FULFILLED: N/A

3. INTERPRETATION in light of Original Reader
He committed the same sins as his father before him, and he was not faithful to the LORD his God, as his ancestor David had been(1Ki 14:3). And, there was constant war between Abijam and Jeroboam(1Ki 15:7).
Nevertheless, the LORD his God allowed his descendants to continue ruling, shining like a lamp for David had done what was pleasing in the LORD's sight and had obeyed the LORD's commands throughout his life(1Ki 15:4~5).

4. REMARKS: N/A
5. LEADERSHIP APPLICATION:
Even though King Abijam committed sins and was not faithful to the LORD, the LORD allowed his descendants to continue ruling for David had done what was pleasing in the LORD's sight(1Ki 15:3~5). Like this, if a leader is faithful and obey the LORD's commands, his descendants can be blessed by God in spite of their sins. It means a good leadership is blessing not only for the people he reigns, but also for his descendants, too. -end-

Life of the Kings of Judah (3)
