1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:
Since the message of the book is a prediction of the destruction of Nineveh, it must have been delivered sometime 612BC., when the city was destroyed by the Babylonians. It was written after 663BC.,the year that the capital of Egypt,Thebes, was captured by Assyria. Since Thebes regained its independence in654BC.,and Nahum does not allude to that event, it may by that the book was written between 663 and 654BC.
Nahum proclaims the doom of the Assyrian capital of Nineveh. Among the reasons for the condemnation of the city are the inhumanities of the Assyrian army(2:12), and the vices of the city(3:4). The nature of God, specially His wrath, His holiness,and His power, makes it inevitable that His enemies will perish(1:2-10)
2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?
The Lord is jealous God,filled with vengeance and rage. He takes revenge on all who oppose him(1:2)
The Lord is slow to get angry, but his power is great, and he never lets the guilty go unpunished.(1:3)
His rage blazes forth like fire(1:6)
The lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes, He is close to those who trust in Him(1:7)
3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?
In the verse of 1:15, Nahum prophesy Jesus will come to the earth as;"Look! A messenger is coming over the mountains with good news! He is bringing a message of peace.
4.Personal application:
The Lord's rage blazes like fie. He destroyed the whole city of Nineveh which he loved so much in the book of Jonah. His power is greater than any other.
By the way, why I fear of the earthly power instead of Godly one? Logically I do understand very well that there is nothing impossible and I'm strong because God is always in my side and support on me. But, actually I feel I'm not strong in front of the power of the earthly world. Be strong and be courageous!! My god is stronger than any other, and he is in my side !!!
5.Point of Passion Assignment
I want to help nonbelievers to know they are strong when they believe in God. For this, I have to show how I'm strong as a child of God. Be strong and be courageous - This is the mission God gave me so to expand the Kingdom of God in the earth.
