Habakkuk

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Internal evidence in the book of Habakkuk indicates a date between the death of King Josiah(609BC) and the beginning of the Babylonian captivity(605BC).
The only explicit time references in this book are to the Babylonian invasion as an imminent event(1:6, 2:1, 3:16).
And, the deplorable conditions of the people(1:2-4) imply a date after the untimely death of Josiah(609BC) and early in the wicked reign of King Jehoiakim(609-597BC)

Realizing Israel's iniquity and need for punishment, Habakkuk was perplexed why God employ the even more wicked Babylonians to chastise His children. God gave him answer that everyone must eventually face judgement for their offenses(2:2-20). God also gave him a vision of His infinite glory(ch.3). And, he joyfully praised the God.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

In the vision of Habakkuk, we can see God's nature as "His brilliant splendor fills the heavens, and the earth is filled with his praise"(3:3).
And, as many time God told us he dislikes the proud, the wealthy, the arrogant and the greedy(2:4-5).

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the verse of 3:13 "You went out to rescue your chosen people, to save your anointed ones", Habakkuk is prophesying that God will rescue and save His people. And,he prophesied in 2:14 as "For as the waters fill the sea, the earth will be filled with an awareness of the glory of the Lord."

4.Personal application:

As the verse of 3:17-19, even though I cannot get any result from my effort, even though all the circumstances are against me, and even though my situations are being changed for the worse day by day, yet I have to rejoice in the Lord, I have to be joyful in the God of my salvation.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to be a bridge which is connecting the unbelievers with God. I want to be a bridge through it the unbelievers who lost their hope and meaning of life can find their hope and new life. Then, even though they feel they lost everything, they could be joyful because of God. Like this I want to be passage through this way the unbelievers can find a way toward God.   -end-
