Nehemiah

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

According to the Nelson's, the book of Nehemiah is a complement to the Book of Ezra.  It provides additional information about the religious and social reforms that took place in Judah and Jerusalem in the mid-fifth century BC. While Ezra deals with the religious restoration of Judah, Nehemiah is primarily concerned with Judah's political and geographical restoration. Great attention is devoted to the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

After the wall was finished, all the people assembled with a unified purpose, and Ezra read the Book of the Law aloud to everyone and explained the meaning of what was being read, helping the people understand each passage. And, the people had all been  weeping as they listened to the words of the Law(8:2-9).
Then Nehemiah said to the people"Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. Don't be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!(8:10)."
It's not difficult to imagine the atmosphere at that time. All the people should be surrounded fully with the Holy spirit. So, their mindset, speeches, and activities reveal Gods character. And, in this verse(8:10), we can find the God's character, who is caring the poor and pleased with the sight of people's joyousness instead of dejectedness or sadness.
Right, in any cases we can & have to be joyful because the joy of the Lord is our strength!

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the Ch.8:11-12, the situation repeated as "And the Levites, too, quieted the people, telling them, "Hush! Don't weep! For this is a sacred day." So the people went away to eat and drink at a festive meal, to share gifts of food, and to celebrate with great joy because they had heard God's words and understood them." What a holy, peaceful, and joyful scene it is! And, the real God's redemption was achieved when the people heard God's words and understood them.

4.Personal application:

When I accepted the gospel several years ago, I couldn't convince I'm free from the sins. I could understand I should be free, but couldn't feel it actually. Now I could find the secret, it was the words of God. Just after we understand God's words, we can repent wholeheartedly and get the freedom from our sins.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to help unbelievers know about Jesus, accept the gospel, and be freed from their sins. If I don't know about Jesus, how can I help them? If I am not free from my sins, how can I help them be freed from their sins? Only God's words-the Bible-can make me know about Jesus and and be freed from my sins. And, I can help unbelievers, too.   -end-
