1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:
Zephaniah fixes the time of his prophecy "in the days of Josiah son of Amon, King of Judah"(1:1) And, considering the situations of Josiah's reign period(640-609BC), the year of destruction of Nineveh(612BC), and Josiah's religious reforms began about 628BC, the time of Zephaniah may be dated about 635-625BC.
This is a fierce and grim book of warning about the coming day of the Lord. Desolation,darkness,and ruin will strike Judah and nations because of the wrath of God upon sin.
But, on the other hand, this book includes the message of the restoration of Israel, and the salvation in the day of the Lord(3:8-20).
2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?
In the verse 3:8, we can meet one character of God. God told "All the earth will be devoured by the fire of my jealousy". Like this, our got is jealous God. He is jealous of us, He doesn't allow we turn against Him and worship idols.
And, in 3:11, we can find that our God dislikes arrogance and haughtiness. He says"I will remove all proud an arrogant people from among you. There will be no more haughtiness on my holy mountain."
3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?
In the verse of 3:15-17, we can see the God's plan that He will stop His judgement and save the Jerusalem promising He will be together with them; "For the Lord will remove his hand of judgement ~. And, the Lord himself,the King of Israel will live among you! ~ For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior."
4.Personal application:
Even God punishes us because of our sins, His purpose is to restore us through cleansing us and stand us among all the nations.(3:20) So, I have to keep my faith in any situations, in any unfair or unknowable situations.

I want to make unbelievers know about God, understand Him and believe in Him. When I make them understand well how God is jealous of them, they should be touched so much and very joyful for that truth and falling in love with God. How wonderful mission it is!! -end-
