Daniel

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Daniel was claimed to write this book(12:4), and he used the autobiographical first person from 7:2 onward. Daniel was a Jewish youth of noble birth carried off to Babylon in the first captivity under Nebuchadnezzar in 605BC. He became a member of the Babylonian royal service early in his captivity and spent most of his career as a high-ranking advisor to Nebuchadnezzar. He ministered for the full duration of the Babylon captivity as a prophet and government official.
And, after Babylon was conquered by the Persians in 539BC, Daniel achieved considerable importance again under King Darius. His prophetic ministry was directed to the Gentile courts of Babylon and Persia, as well as the his Jewish countrymen. Zerubbabel led a return of the Jews to Jerusalem in the first year of Cyrus, and Daniel lived and ministered at least until the third year of Cyrus(539BC; 10:1). Daniel's book would appear to have been written by the ninth year of Cyrus(530BC).

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

In the Daniel's praising God, we can find God's characters.
"Praise the name of God forever and ever, for he has all wisdom and power. He controls the course of world events; he removes kings and sets up other kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars. He reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden in darkness, through he is surrounded by light"(2:20-22).
And, we can find it even in the King Darius's message as "For he is living God, and he will endure forever. ~ he performs miraculous signs and wonders in the heavens and on earth.(6:26-27)

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

Through the vision of Daniel, we can meet God's redemptive plan very obviously.;  "~I saw someone like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence. He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal- it will never end.  His kingdom will never be destroyed."(7:13-14)

4.Personal application:

The book of Daniel includes the most famous stories in the Bible; Daniel's three friends in the fiery furnace, the handwriting on the wall at Belshazzar's feast, and Daniel in the den of lions. These stories are not only interesting, but also very impressed because their lives were characterized by faith, prayer, courage, consistency, and lack of compromise.
Compare to their lives, my life is too easy going, lazy, coward, and changeable. Nevertheless I could be forgiven and saved from my sins. How can it be available? Right,it's God's grace!
I don't know how I could get this privilege. Just I thank God, and have to change my life to resemble with Daniel and his three friends.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to help unbelievers know God and believe in Him. For this, most of all, I have to show them my faithfulness. If not, I cannot help them, and further more, they may be doubt of God because of my immature faith. I have to stop considering that my faith is my own personal matter. Actually, my faith influences a lots of people around me. How can I accompany with Daniel & his friends' faith journey ?    -end-
