Isaiah

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Isaiah's ministry ranged from 740 to 680 BC.(1:1). This period is from near the end of Uzziah's reign through the reigns of Jotham,Ahaz, and Hezekiah.
During the time of Isaiah, Assyria was growing in power under Tiglath-Pileser,who conquered many nations including the Northern Kingdom of Israel(722 BC).
This book can be divided into three sections;prophecies of condemnation(ch.1-35), and historical parenthesis of interlude(ch.36-39), and prophecies of comfort and consolation(ch.40-66).
Isaiah's message is presented against the background of Israel's greatest period of prosperity after the "Golden Age" under David and Solomon. Prosperity, agricultural and commercial success, and military success were accompanied by immorality, excessive drinking, idolatry, oppression of the poor, greed, and the presence of false prophets. In response to this situation, Isaiah stressed salvation by faith, the holiness of God, the offense of human sin and the assurance of redemption for a repentant remnant.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

In the verse 1:14 "I hate your new moon celebrations and your annual festivals", we can find God doesn't like showmanship of Pharisee.
On the other hand, God ordered us to help the oppressed, orphans, and widows instead of showing our faith in front of people.(1:17)
And, in this book, many chapters were allocated for describing about God's judgement against the pagan countries and cities surrounding Israel(Ch.10-Assyria, 13/21-Babylon, 14-Philistia, 15~16-Moab, 17-Damascus, 18-Ethiopia, 19-Egypt,23-Tyre, 28-Samaria).
Like this, even though the messages are about the judgement, we can understand that God is watching at and concerning about all the nations.
And, we can meet very passionate God to have a relationship with us in Ch.65:1-2 ; "I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help. I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me. I said, "Here I am, here I am!" to a nation that did not call on my name." All day long I opened my arms to a rebellious people. But they follow their own evil paths and their own crooked schemes. - How he loves us! How we make God feel lonely!

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?

In the ch.11:1~5, we can find a prophecy about Jesus's descent. This book prophesied the redeemer would come from David's family(11:1), and he would give justice to the poor, and the earth would shake at the force of his word(11:4).
And, in the ch.11:10, it was written as "In that day the heir to David's throne will be a banner of salvation to all the world."

4.Personal application:

I repent for the time I made God feel anxious, sorry, sad and lonely. What made me be so arrogant and rebellious against God ? I thank God for the long time He waited being opened His arms to me.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to help nonbelievers to know that God is still waiting for their repentance, and He is very passionate to have a intimate relationship with them.
How can I make them understand about this loving God.
How can I be passionate to love them like as God was passionate toward me.
I have to love them more and more, and wait them longer and longer with opened arms.   -end-
