Jeremiah

1.Historical background and purpose of the prophet:

Jeremiah was a contemporary of Zephaniah,Habakkuk,Daniel, and Ezekiel, and his ministry stretched from probably 627 to 580BC.
From 627 to 605BC he prophesied while Judah was threatened by Assyria an Egypt. From 605 to 586BC he proclaimed God's judgement while Judah was threatened and besieged by Babylon. From 586 to about 580BC he ministered in Jerusalem and Egypt after Judah's downfall.
During that time people believed that God would not let Jerusalem fall because they possessed the temple and the one true religion. Jeremiah was required to tell them that the terms of God's covenant mandated punishment for disobedience.

2.What does this book show about the Character and Nature of God?

There is one of God' character in Ch 2:35, described as "you say, 'I have done nothing wrong. Surely God isn't angry with me!' But now I will punish you severely because you claim you have not sinned". Like this our God hates our human arrogance most of all. And, it means He is loving human humility.
And, God told to Jeremiah to search throughout the city, if he can find even one just and honest person, God will not destroy the city(5:1). In this phrase, we can find that our God is concerned with and knows everything about each of us.
In the Ch 7:5, God says "I will be merciful only if you stop your evil thoughts and deeds and start treating each other with justice". Here we can see one of God's character of "justice".
In 23:9-39, God tells us how we distinguish the false prophets and not to be deceived by this wicked men. Even though He decided to punish the people of Judah, He is still worrying about His people. It means nevertheless we have to punished because of our sins, God still loves us till the end.

3.What does this book show you about God's redemptive plan for mankind?
This book tells us continuously about the punishment of God according to the sins of people, nevertheless we can find God's redemptive plan in the same time. In the verse of 3:15, God says as "I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will guide you with knowledge and understanding. And when your land is once more filled with people." Like this, God was planning to send us Jesus.

4.Personal application:

Often Jeremiah wanted to quit his job as a prophet because his message was so hash and miserable that he got just unfriendly responses. Nevertheless he obeyed God, and have sent His message to the people over 40 years.
If I were Jeremiah at that time, could I obey God's command like him? I cannot confirm it. Why? Because even though now I have a command to send a good message(not hash, not miserable!) to the people, I am so lazy and coward to do it.
How can I be eager and courageous for this mission of evangelism? When I meet someone who doesn't know about Jesus, I have to remind the prophet Jeremiah. Then I might feel be happy for that I don't need to send the hash message to him, instead I have very good news about Jesus.

5.Point of Passion Assignment

I want to be a messenger of God, and send the God's good news to the people who couldn't hear it or misunderstood it, even who rebel, reject and object it. Don't forget there are so many people who couldn't get opportunity to hear well about the Gospel in the world. I have to feel emergency because there are so many people who are suffering, crying and dying at this moment.    -end-
